Kolkata: Several petitions have been submitted to the Calcutta High Court concerning the violence that erupted last week in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, during protests against the Waqf Act.

One petition was filed on Wednesday at a single-judge bench, requesting an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incidents. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh admitted the petition, which will be heard on Thursday. This petition was brought forth by members of families in Murshidabad who were victims of the violence.

Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, also filed a petition seeking permission to visit the conflict-affected areas in Murshidabad after he alleged that police denied him access. His request was accepted by Justice Ghosh’s bench, and a hearing is scheduled for the latter part of Wednesday.

Previously, Adhikari had similarly been denied police permission to visit Mothabari in Malda district, where another riot-like situation occurred. He eventually secured permission from Justice Ghosh’s bench to visit Mothabari.

Additionally, a voluntary organization seeking to establish relief camps in the disturbed areas of Murshidabad approached Justice Amrita Sinha for permission. The organization claimed that the District Magistrate had denied them the opportunity to set up these camps, prompting them to seek intervention from the High Court. Justice Sinha’s bench admitted this petition, with a hearing set for Thursday.

According to the district administration, conditions in Murshidabad began to stabilize by Wednesday morning, and internet services were restored in most areas except Samserganj. However, prohibitory orders under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 remain in effect in the district.
