Indian Army begins snow-clearing operation for Hemkund Sahib Yatra; route set to open from May 25

A team of the Indian Army has reached Gurudwara Govindghat to clear the snow and prepare the path to Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib, a famous Sikh pilgrimage site in Uttarakhand. This team will start the service work from April 19.

The doors of Hemkund Sahib, located at an altitude of about 15 thousand feet, will be opened for devotees from May 25. Earlier, an army team surveyed the area so that the work of removing snow and making the path could be started in a safe and effective manner.

According to the army, the Atlakoti glacier is completely covered with snow and about 30 feet of snow is frozen here. There is 10 feet of snow on the small Atlakoti glacier and 8 to 10 feet of snow around Hemkund Sahib. There is also 2 to 7 feet of snow on the 6 km long route from Govind Dham to Hemkund Sahib.

Formal launch from May 22

President of Hemkund Sahib Trust, Narendrajit Singh Bindra, said that the yatra will officially start on May 22 from Gurudwara Shri Rishikesh under the leadership of Panch Pyaras. Clearing the snow from the path and making other necessary preparations can take three weeks to one month, so a team of 25 army personnel has started the work a month in advance.

This team has reached Govind Ghat today and will reach Govind Dham 13 km away tomorrow, where they will stay for a day to acclimatise to the weather and environment. They will leave for Hemkunt Sahib from April 19. First of all, the snow will be removed from the road and the road will be prepared. After this, the snow around the Gurudwara will be removed.

Bridge construction work is going on at a fast pace

Bindra said that the bridge on the river near Gurudwara Govind Ghat was broken due to landslide, which is being rebuilt. This work is also going on fast and the construction work will be completed in a few days. This new bridge will have a capacity of 30 tonnes. He said that due to the efforts of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, this work is going on fast and the government has also assured to provide the necessary facilities for the journey.
