Extension of NSA on MP Amritpal Singh, family calls it undemocratic, plans legal challenge

Preparations are underway to extend the National Security Act (NSA) imposed on Khadoor Sahib MP and Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh for one more year.

Amritsar: Preparations are underway to extend the National Security Act (NSA) imposed on Khadoor Sahib MP and Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh for one more year. If its duration is extended for the third time before April 22, the family may approach the Punjab Haryana High Court.

Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, expressed his displeasure and said that there is a separate law for Sikhs in the country. He called the extension of NSA a betrayal of democracy and the voters of Khadur Sahib. He said that despite Amritpal being in jail, incidents of crime and violence are taking place in the state, which proves the government’s argument of deteriorating atmosphere wrong.

Information not given to the family

The family alleges that they have not been informed about the extension of the NSA and neither do they have any information about it yet. Tarsem Singh also said that some people do not want Amritpal to be released. His release will stop their illegal business.

Appeal will be filed in the The High Court

Senior advocate RS Bains also termed the extension of NSA for the third time as a failure of the government. He said that the government should conduct a trial in the FIR registered against Amritpal. He indicated that he will once again challenge this decision in the High Court. Advocate Bains is the same person who has already filed an application in the court regarding the imposition of NSA on Amritpal Singh.

Home Department is reviewing the reports

The state’s Home and Justice Department is considering extending the custody based on the recommendation of the District Magistrate of Amritsar and the report of intelligence agencies. It is being told that the final decision will be taken after the recommendations of the Advisory Board. It is expected that this decision will be taken by April 22. If a decision is taken to shift him, then a team of Punjab Police is already present in Dibrugarh, Assam.

Amritpal is in custody since April 2023

Amritpal Singh has been in custody since 23 April 2023. Soon after his arrest, the NSA was imposed on him and he was sent to Dibrugarh jail in Assam. The government imposed NSA, calling his activities a threat to the security of the state. Which was extended from time to time for two years. But now the consideration is going on to extend his period.
