The Himachal Pradesh government has set a target of making the state a green state by 2027. Work has started on this. This will also employ the youth. The forest department is identifying suitable land for plantation across the state. Department teams are conducting surveys in villages. Under the scheme, Gram Panchayats and Yuva Mandals will be given assistance for planting trees on one to five hectares of land.
Up to Rs 2.40 lakh will be given for two hectares of land. If more than 50 percent of the planted saplings survive, an additional amount of Rs 1 lakh will be given every year for the next four years. If any Gram Panchayat or Yuva Mandal wants to take advantage of this scheme, they will have to contact their nearest forest guard or regional forest officer.
After registration, the forest department employees will come to the village and inspect the land. They will see whether the land is suitable for plantation or not, how many saplings can be planted there and what type of saplings will be planted. Only some specific species have been selected for planting saplings. Local trees like Ban, Beul and fruit-bearing plants like Anardana, Kachnar and Buransh will be planted at these places.
This will not only benefit the environment but the villagers will also get the benefit of fruits and wood. Thirumal, Chief Forest Officer, Forest Circle Shimla, said that village panchayats and youth groups can apply to the department for planting trees. This scheme aims to increase greenery in the state and involve people in protecting the environment.
