New Delhi, May 1: The Government of India postponed the scheduled meeting with farmer unions that was to take place on May 4, following a request by the unions to exclude representatives of the Punjab government.
In an official letter issued bu Purna Chandra Kishan, IAS, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the Centre acknowledged receipt of a letter dated April 27, 2025, from the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) Forum. The unions had demanded that Punjab Government officials not be included in the upcoming meeting, warning they would otherwise boycott the meeting.
Referring to the earlier agreement reached during the previous round of talks, the letter reminded the unions of the critical role state governments play in India’s federal structure. “IT is appropriate to include state government representatives in such meetings,” the letter stated.
The government has appealed to the farmer leaders to reconsider their stance for the sake of continued dialogue and conflict resolution. “We request you to take a positive view of the matter and agree to the meeting with the participation of the state,” the letter stated.
The May 4 meeting has now been deferred. A new date will be decided once the unions convey their agreement to participate in talks with the state’s involvement.
