Bhopal: A sudden fire broke out at the renowned Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday but was quickly contained by emergency teams, with no casualties reported, officials confirmed.
The blaze originated around noon at the control room located above the pollution control board’s facility within the temple grounds at Avantika Gate (Gate No. 1). The flames rapidly engulfed the structure, causing panic among visitors and onlookers. Thick smoke and visible flames spread across the vicinity, prompting authorities to suspend entry of devotees for safety reasons.
Fire brigade teams swiftly responded to the incident, managing to extinguish the fire shortly afterward. The cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined, and officials did not specify the exact reason but indicated that an electrical short circuit near the batteries of the Air Quality Management System might be involved. A detailed investigation is ongoing.
Senior officials, including the District Collector and Superintendent of Police, arrived at the scene to supervise the firefighting efforts. Officials reassured the public that there had been no human casualties.
Once the situation was brought under control, the temple gates were reopened, allowing devotees to access the temple again. The incident has temporarily disrupted the daily routine at the highly visited Mahakal Temple, which is a significant spiritual site drawing thousands of worshippers every day.
The Mahakal temple has recently undergone major enhancements with the development of the Mahakal Lok Corridor—a 900-meter-long extension that has expanded the temple complex’s area from three hectares to 47 hectares, improving facilities and pathways to enrich the spiritual experience for visitors.
