In a major development, the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Wednesday directed the registration of an FIR against Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah for making an objectionable remark against Colonel Sofia Qureshi. A division bench of Justice Atul Shridharan and Justice Anuradha Shukla of the Jabalpur High Court took suo motu cognisance of the issue.

The court instructed the DGP to file the FIR within 4 hours, warning of contempt proceedings if the directive is not followed. Rural DIG Nimesh Aggarwal stated that they are awaiting official orders and will proceed accordingly.

The court observed that Shah’s remarks prima facie violate Sections 152 and 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which pertain to acts endangering national unity and spreading communal disharmony.

The minister, during a public event in Raikunda village, Indore, referred to Colonel Qureshi as the “sister of terrorists.” The video of the statement went viral on Tuesday, sparking public outrage. The court emphasised that such comments against a decorated officer and member of the Muslim community are not only defamatory but also threaten national integrity.

The FIR is to be registered by Wednesday evening, and strict action is expected.
