Sindh [Pakistan]: A team from the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) conducted visits to hospitals in Shikarpur and Kashmore-Kandhkot districts, uncovering issues such as lack of clean drinking water, inadequate sanitation, frequent power outages without backup systems, poor infrastructure, and staffing shortages, according to The Express Tribune.

Led by SHRC Chairman Iqbal Ahmed Detho, the officials pointed out the shortage of toilets, improper seating arrangements, a limited number of beds, and the absence of free medicines. Many female patients, suffering in extreme heat, had to sit on the floor outside overcrowded outpatient departments due to the lack of proper waiting areas.

At Taluka Headquarters Hospital (THQ) in Kandhkot, Chairman Detho directed hospital authorities to expedite the relocation to the new building. He advised the District Health Officer, Dr. Aijaz Ali Shah, and Medical Superintendent Shahnawaz Dahani to enhance the quality of services and facilities at the current hospital.

Regarding Taluka Hospital Lakhi in Shikarpur, Detho noted that patients were helplessly lying on beds during power outages in the scorching heat. During interactions with civil society groups in the two districts, the commission identified various health service issues needing attention.

Detho also visited the judicial lockup in Kashmore-Kandhkot, which is troubled by banditry, tribal conflicts, robberies, and drug trafficking. The district lacks a dedicated jail, with most prisoners held in Shikarpur prison. He emphasized the urgent need to establish a district jail, as the current situation hampers visitation rights and causes delays in court proceedings.
