Imphal: Security forces in Manipur have detained nine militants affiliated with various banned groups over the past 24 hours from different districts, officials reported on Saturday.
The militants were arrested across five districts—Imphal East, Imphal West, Churachandpur, Thoubal, and Bishnupur—and are linked to groups such as the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Chin Kuki National Defence Force (CKNDF), and United National Liberation Front (UNLF).
These individuals are involved in activities such as kidnapping, various crimes, intimidating locals for different reasons, and forcibly collecting money from contractors, traders, government officials, and ordinary citizens. Authorities also recovered weapons, ammunition, Aadhaar cards, several incriminating documents, and various other materials from the arrested militants.
One militant from CKNDF, Thongkhohou Touthang (34), is noted for recruiting youths into armed insurgency and facilitating cross-border weapons and cadre movements. He was also involved in extorting money from the public under the guise of the CKNDF. His possession included a mobile phone and SIM card.
Manipur shares a 398-kilometer unfenced border with Myanmar, and since last year, the Border Road Organisation (BRO) has been working on fencing these challenging frontiers. Militants often exploit the porous, mountainous, and forested border for cross-border activities.
With these nine arrests, security forces have apprehended 38 militants in the last four days. Ongoing search and area domination operations continue in hill and valley districts, with many arms and ammunition recovered from locations in Imphal East, Kakching, and Senapati.
