Uttarakhand: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in the mountainous districts of Uttarakhand, effective today and tomorrow. In response, Uttarakhand Police has issued a safety advisory for pilgrims undertaking the Chardham Yatra, urging caution during travel, consideration of weather conditions, and calling 112 in case of emergencies. Authorities are actively working to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions.
Similarly, Himachal Pradesh is preparing for possible hailstorms on May 19 and 20 as atmospheric conditions become increasingly unstable. The IMD has issued warnings for severe weather in the region, with heavy rain and thunderstorms affecting parts of Mandi district last night. Alerts have been issued for multiple districts, including Una, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur, warning of hail, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. A yellow alert is also in effect for some districts on May 18 and 19, cautioning residents about thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds. The forecast predicts isolated light rain and even snow in high-altitude areas through May 21.
The weather disruptions have led to power outages and transportation problems, prompting residents to stay indoors and avoid risky areas prone to landslides or flash floods. Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with emergency teams ready to respond. Meanwhile, the 126 MW Larji Hydroelectric Power Project in Kullu district, which was severely affected by floods on July 9-10, 2023, has been fully restored and is now operational. The swift recovery, completed in less than two years with government support, has helped prevent significant financial losses.
