Himachal: High-secondary schools with 15 children in tribal areas to be merged, hostels will also be constructed

Hostels will also be built to increase the number of students in tribal areas.

There will be relaxation in the rules for merging schools in the tribal areas of Himachal. The education department has been asked to make separate rules for some schools in Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, and Shimla. High and senior secondary schools with a student strength of 15 will be merged in these areas. The number of students has been fixed at 25 for general areas of the state. Hostels will also be built to increase the number of students in tribal areas.

Education Minister Rohit Thakur said that there has been a relaxation in the rules for merging schools in tribal areas. The geographical situation of these areas is different. Rules like general areas cannot be applied here. Officials have been told that when the number of students is less than 25 for merging schools in general areas of the state from sixth to twelfth class, then this number should be fixed at 15 in tribal areas. The education minister said that the opinion of local public representatives will also be taken in this regard.

According to the department, the number of students in Lahaul-Spiti district is around 2,700 and there are 800 teachers. There are 5,000 children and 1500 teachers in Kinnaur. These days many children from the districts are shifting to Dharamshala, Shimla, Mandi and other places. In view of this, the government has now decided to build hostels to increase the number of students in tribal areas.
