Kolkata: Law enforcement authorities are investigating a racket involving the issuance of fake Indian identity documents to foreign nationals, primarily Bangladeshis, who are enrolled as voters in West Bengal using forged papers. The probe revealed that Azad Mullick, a Pakistani citizen recently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in Kolkata, was involved in facilitating the acquisition of fake documents such as EPIC cards, Aadhaar cards, and even passports by arranging Bangladeshi and Indian citizenship fraudulently.
Investigations show Mullick was registered as a voter in the Dum Dum-Uttar Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas, and he had cast votes in both the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, indicating attempts to establish and use illegal Indian citizenship. Further inquiries suggest Mullick was not alone, with multiple individuals suspected of using forged documents to vote in elections with the intent of legally establishing Indian citizenship through illegal means.
Authorities are also probing a network of agents operating across hospitals, village panchayats, and municipal offices, who allegedly produce fake birth certificates and ration cards to facilitate the creation of false Indian identities for infiltrators. These agents are believed to be linked to organized rackets that manipulate government records, especially within departments like Food and Civil Supplies, to issue fake ration cards.
The investigation points to a systematic pattern: illegal cross-border migrants contact agents who provide them shelter and then help obtain fake birth certificates and ration cards. These documents serve as the foundation for further illegal identity documents such as EPICs, Aadhaar, PAN cards, and eventually fake passports—all essential for legalizing their presence in India.
