Tajikistan experienced a 4.4 magnitude earthquake, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, which increases the likelihood of aftershocks. The NCS posted on X that the earthquake’s coordinates were approximately 37.94°N latitude and 72.44°E longitude.
Previously, on May 20, a 3.9 magnitude quake hit the same region at similar depths, and earlier on May 8, a 4.4 magnitude tremor was recorded. Additionally, on May 6, Tajikistan experienced a 4.9 magnitude earthquake.
Shallow earthquakes like these tend to be more destructive than deeper ones because they release more energy closer to the Earth’s surface, causing stronger shaking and potential damage.
Tajikistan’s rugged, mountainous terrain makes it especially vulnerable to seismic activity. The country’s diverse topography and climate hazards—such as floods, droughts, avalanches, landslides, and mudslides—threaten its fragile mountain ecosystems, glacier-fed rivers, and hydropower supplies. The region’s isolated forests and mountainous, riverine terrain further increase its susceptibility to land degradation and natural disasters.
