Temperature crosses 47 degrees in Punjab, heat wave alert in 18 districts today

There is a possibility of heat increasing even at night

Jalandhar: The period of severe heat continues in Punjab. In the last 24 hours, the temperature of the state has increased by 0.3 degrees, which is 5.4 degrees more than normal. Bathinda has been the hottest in the country. A temperature of 47.6 degrees has been recorded here. Reportedly, the body of a person was recovered in a park opposite the bicycle stand in Jalandhar on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities confirmed the individual succumbed to the extreme heat, underscoring the severity of the ongoing weather crisis

The temperature of most of the cities of the state remains above 43 degrees. A heat wave alert has been issued in 18 districts today. There is a possibility of heat increasing even at night. This situation may persist till June 12, after which rain is expected.

It is worth noting that such severe heat is falling after 13 years. Earlier on June 1, 2012, a temperature of 47.6 degrees was recorded in Amritsar. At the same time, the temperature of Chandigarh has also reached 44 degrees. Along with this, the demand for electricity in the state has also increased to 16,249 MW.

According to the Chandigarh Meteorological Department, heat wave will prevail in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Bathinda, Fazilka, Muktsar and Mansa today. At the same time, nights will also remain hot. Apart from this, heat wave is also likely in Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Barnala, Moga, Sangrur, Patiala, Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib.

Due to heat wave and paddy cultivation in the state, the demand for electricity has increased significantly. The demand for electricity has reached 16,249 MW, an increase of 625 MW. On Monday, this demand was recorded at 15,624 MW.

On Tuesday, the demand for electricity broke the record of the last two years. In 2023, the maximum demand for electricity was 9,790 MW on June 10, while in 2024 it was 11,509 MW. In June last year, the highest demand was recorded at 16,089 MW on June 29.

Powercom has the arrangement to meet the demand of 16,900 MW of electricity. After this, there may be a possibility of power cut.
