Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Rakesh Joshi announced that DNA testing has confirmed the identities of 190 victims of the recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad. Out of these, 157 bodies have been handed over to their respective families. Joshi revealed that among the matched DNA samples, 123 belong to Indian nationals, 27 to residents of the United Kingdom, and one sample has been identified as that of a Canadian citizen. Additionally, he noted that the DNA of a person from Portugal and non-passengers has also been matched.
Addressing the media, Joshi stated, “As of 10:45 AM today, 190 DNA samples have been confirmed. The remains of 157 victims have been delivered to their families. The DNA matches include 123 Indians, 7 Portuguese, 27 from the UK, four non-passengers, and one Canadian.” He further confirmed that the only survivor of the crash, Vishwas, who was aboard the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, has been discharged from hospital and has returned home with his family.
Earlier in the day, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi shared on X (formerly Twitter) that 184 DNA samples had been matched by 8 AM, providing an update on the ongoing identification process. The forensic investigations are being carried out by teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU).
The tragic incident occurred on June 12, shortly after the aircraft took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, heading to London. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex at BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area, resulting in the death of 241 of the 242 onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
