Uttarakhand: A landslide on the trekking route to the Kedarnath shrine resulted in the deaths of two people and injured three others on Wednesday, according to police. The landslide happened at 11:20 am near Junglechatti Ghat, where boulders tumbled down the hillside and struck pilgrims, as well as palanquin carriers and porter operators.
The rubble caused the victims to fall into a gorge, said Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Akhay Prahlad Konde. Emergency teams from police and SDRF quickly arrived at the scene and began search and rescue efforts.
Rescue teams, along with local residents, faced difficulties in retrieving the bodies and injured individuals from the gorge using ropes. The two victims died instantly, while the three injured, including a woman who sustained minor injuries, were taken to a health center in Gaurikund for treatment. The seriously injured men were referred for further medical care, the SP added.
The identities of the deceased and injured are still being verified. Despite the accident, pilgrim movement along the route is ongoing, with police providing protection, Konde confirmed.
