Uttarakhand HC stays panchayat polls over reservation quota dispute

Nainital High Court has put a stay on Uttarakhand Panchayat elections. The High Court took this decision during the hearing on the reservation dispute on Monday.

Dehradun, June 23: Nainital High Court has put a stay on Uttarakhand Panchayat elections. The High Court took this decision during the hearing on the reservation dispute on Monday. The High Court has given clear instructions that the stay on the election process will continue until the government presents a clear policy regarding reservation in Panchayat elections before the court. After this order, the preparations of the State Election Commission have suffered a setback.

There will be no election program at the moment

Actually, a notification was issued on Saturday regarding the Panchayat elections in Uttarakhand. But the High Court has stayed the three-tier Panchayat elections as the state government has not issued any notification on reservation. Along with this, the High Court has also commented that no further electoral action should be taken.

The government should clarify the status of reservation in the next hearing

The state government had not issued clear guidelines regarding reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women in the Panchayat elections. On this basis, the petitioners had filed a petition in the High Court.

The High Court has asked the government to clarify the status of reservation in the next hearing. Now everyone’s eyes are fixed on the next step of the government and the policy to be presented in the court.

The election program was released on 21 May

On May 21, the State Election Commission released the program for the three-tier panchayat elections in a conference at 12:30 pm. Under which the nomination process was to start from June 25, but before that the High Court has banned the panchayat elections. This has come as a shock to the state government as well as all the leaders preparing for the elections. Panchayat elections were to be held in 12 districts of the state except Haridwar district.
