Jodhpur, June 23: Asaram, an 86-year-old serving a life sentence in Jodhpur Central Jail, has been granted interim bail on medical grounds until June 30. The bail allows him to seek treatment for heart ailments and age-related health issues. This marks his temporary release after spending over 11 years in jail.

Convicted for sexual assault in two states
Asaram was convicted in 2018 for raping a minor at his ashram in Jodhpur and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2023, a Gujarat court also found him guilty of repeatedly raping a woman disciple at his ashram and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

SC earlier granted bail
The Supreme Court had previously granted him interim bail on medical grounds until March 31, which was later extended. Now, the Gujarat High Court has further extended his interim bail until June 30, providing him temporary relief.

Multiple paroles granted previously
Asaram has been granted periodic paroles in the past for medical treatment. This latest development allows him to continue receiving medical attention outside of jail. His health issues have been a significant factor in his temporary releases, and the court’s decision reflects consideration for his medical needs.

The extension of interim bail will provide Asaram with temporary reprieve, but he will be required to surrender once the bail period expires. Asaram’s case has been closely watched, and the court’s decision will continue to be monitored.
