Tehran: Iran has executed three men accused of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad. The men—Idris Ali, Azad Shojai, and Rasoul Ahmad Rasoul—were hanged in Urmia, a city near the Turkish border, on Wednesday, according to the Iranian Judiciary’s website, Mizan Online.

The judiciary stated that the men attempted to import equipment into Iran to carry out assassinations and were arrested and tried for cooperation with the “Zionist regime,” a term Iran uses for Israel. The executions took place shortly after Iran’s arrests of at least 700 individuals suspected of having ties with Israel during ongoing tensions.

Iran had previously executed similar suspects on June 14 and June 23. On Monday, Mohammad Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh was also executed for alleged espionage activities related to Mossad, having been arrested in 2023. Additionally, Majid Mosayebi was hanged on June 22 for attempting to provide sensitive information to Mossad, with his case approved by the Supreme Court.

Reports suggest that Israeli spies were active in Iran even before the recent airstrikes in Tehran launched on June 13, with claims of smuggling weapons into the country. The executions come amid heightened tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States, with Iran previously making numerous arrests linked to Israeli espionage activities.
