Kolkata, June 27: A law college student has been gang-raped in Kolkata. The incident took place on June 25. Three accused were arrested on Thursday. According to the police, the accused are Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20).

All three were produced in Alipore ACMJ Court of South 24 Parganas, from where they have been sent to police custody till July 10. Police say that interrogation of the accused is necessary for further investigation. The process of medical examination and statement of the victim is also going on. BJP has accused one of the accused Manojit Mishra of being associated with Trinamool Congress.

The victim is studying in Kolkata Law College. The three accused are also students of the same college.

2 former and one current student included

The incident took place on the college campus between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm on Wednesday. The arrested accused include two current students and one former student.

Two accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested near Siddharth Shankar Rai Shishu Udyan between 7:20 and 7:35 pm on June 26. The mobile phones of both have been recovered by the police.

The third accused, Pramit Mukherjee, was arrested from his house at 12:30 a.m. on June 27 and his mobile phone was also seized.

BJP’s allegation- The accused is associated with Trinamool

BJP leader Amit Malviya shared a Bengali news report on social media and wrote, Shocking incident! A female law student was gang-raped in the college campus, the accused include an alumnus and two college staff.” He also alleged that a person associated with the Trinamool Congress is also involved in this case.

NCW seeks immediate report from Kolkata Police Commissioner

In a statement issued on Friday, the NCW has also sought a report from the Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata, Manoj Kumar Verma, on the matter and directed the latter to send the report to the commission within the next three days. As per the statement, NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Verma expressing deep concern over the incident and directed the latter to ensure an immediate and time-bound investigation into the matter under the relevant provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“She has also stressed the need to extend full medical, psychological, and legal assistance to the victim, along with compensation under Section 396 of BNSS. The Commission has sought a detailed action-taken report within 3 days,” the NCW statement read.

Although Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had yet to comment on the matter, the All India Trinamool Congress finally issued a statement condemning the incident and also commending the Kolkata Police for ensuring the prompt arrest of the three accused persons.

Meanwhile, BJP’s state president in West Bengal and the Union Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar, claimed that the main accused in the case was an active student leader of Trinamool Congress and had associations with top ruling party leaders. He also expressed apprehension that there might be attempts by the administration to hush up this incident as well as was done in the case of R.G. Kar rape and murder tragedy.
