India has officially launched the e-passport service, which will make international travel fast, safe and convenient for Indian citizens.

New Delhi, July 4: Now you will get rid of long queues and paperwork. India has officially launched the e-passport service, which will make international travel fast, safe and convenient for Indian citizens. This announcement was made by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the occasion of the 13th Passport Seva Diwas.

This initiative has been brought under the Passport Seva Programme version 2.0, which is now implemented across the country and is making passport services more transparent and user-friendly through modern technology.

What is e-passport?

An e-passport is a smart, chip-enabled passport in which the biometric and personal information of the passport holder is stored in a contactless microchip.

It will include:

1.Passport holder’s photo

2.Fingerprints

3.Other personal information

With this technology, passport making and verification will be faster, more secure and reliable. Along with this, there will be a decline in cases of forgery, duplicate identity and fraud.

This facility will soon be implemented worldwide

E-passport service will be made available to Indian citizens living abroad as well as in India. The Ministry of External Affairs has started the pilot process of the Global Passport Service Program (Global PSP V2.0) for this, which will soon be implemented in a phased manner in Indian embassies and consulates around the world.

Applying for an e-passport is simple:

Visit the Passport Seva Portal

Create a new user account or login

Fill the e-passport application form

Choose the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK)

Pay the fee online

Book an appointment

Visit the centre at the scheduled time to get biometric and document verification done
