Sambhal (Uttar Pradesh): Ahead of the Muharram processions scheduled across Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, authorities have implemented extensive security measures to guarantee a peaceful observance. Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar Bishnoi announced that a total of 342 Tazias will be carried out in different parts of the district.
To prepare, peace meetings were held in all affected areas, and coordination has been established with Tazia organizers. As part of security arrangements, each Tazia Dar has submitted a list of designated volunteers, who have been issued special ID cards by the police for quick identification and assistance in emergencies.
The police clarified that the height of each Tazia has been limited to 12 feet. In previous years, oversized Tazias often caused disruptions by necessitating the temporary dismantling or cutting of power lines, resulting in losses of around Rs 35-40 lakh. This year, all processions adhered to the prescribed height and route guidelines, avoiding such issues.
A significant focus has been placed on surveillance. Over 12,000 CCTV cameras, including number plate recognition (NPR) and citizen-installed units, have been deployed across the district under the ‘Sambhal Ke Naam’ initiative for real-time monitoring. Drone cameras will also be employed to oversee the entire route from the air.
To further enhance security, three companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and one company of the Rapid Response Force (RRF) have been deployed, with law enforcement personnel remaining on high alert throughout the event. SP Bishnoi issued a strict warning against any attempts to disturb communal harmony, stating that strict action will be taken against offenders. Cyber commandos are actively monitoring social media for provocative content, with three cases already registered and individuals jailed for spreading inflammatory material, including one recent arrest from Asmoli police station.
Bishnoi appealed to the public for cooperation, expressing confidence that Muharram would be observed peacefully. “We expect full support from all communities. Together, we can ensure the occasion passes smoothly without any incidents,” he said.
Sambhal gained attention last November after violence broke out during a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, leading to five fatalities. Since then, the district administration has taken careful and measured steps to maintain communal harmony and prevent further unrest.
