New Delhi, July 12: A four-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Welcome area on Saturday morning. Two people died in the accident while eight people, including a one-year-old child, were injured. A family of 10 people lived in the building.

Anees Ahmed Ansari, who lives in the house opposite the building, said that as soon as the building collapsed, its debris fell on our house. Due to this, I also got injured.

An official said that at 7 am, a report of a building collapse was received in lane number 5 of Janta Colony near Idgah Road in Seelampur.

Local people immediately started relief work

When the building collapsed, the local people were out for a morning walk. These people were the first to start the rescue work. Efforts to save the people trapped in the debris began even before the fire brigade reached the spot. Later, three people were rescued with the help of the fire brigade.

Additional DCP of North-East Delhi Sandeep Lamba said that rescue operations are underway. Police, NDRF, Civil Defence and local people are working on the spot. Local people have helped a lot in the rescue operation.

3 months ago, 11 people died in a building collapse

A four-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Mustafabad area at 2:30 am on April 18. 11 people died in this accident. After the collapse of the 20-year-old building, the rescue operation went on for more than 12 hours.

According to the police, 22 people lived in the building. Among them, the building owner Tahseen and 7 members of his family died. These include 3 women and 4 children. It is believed that the accident happened due to heavy rain and storm.

Neighbors said- it felt like an earthquake

At the time of the incident, people living in the neighbourhood also felt the tremors of an earthquake and said that the floor beneath them was shaking. Ryan, who lives here, said that we thought something had fallen on our house, but when we looked outside, we found that the entire building next to ours had turned into rubble.

Another resident, Salim Ali, said that dirty sewer water has been seeping into the walls of the buildings for years and over time the moisture has weakened the building, causing cracks in the walls. This is why the accident happened. The condition of four to five buildings is still dangerous.

NDRF DIG Mohsin Shahidi said that the Mustafabad accident is called a pancake collapse. In such accidents, the floors of the building collapse one above the other, where the chances of survival are very low. This is a crowded area, so the task of removing the debris became challenging. Heavy machinery could not be used due to lack of space.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed grief

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended her condolences to the families of the deceased. In a post on X she stated: “An unfortunate building collapse was reported at Seelampur. As informed, four persons have been rescued and rushed to the nearest hospital for medical assistance. It is extremely sad to note that the incident has claimed two precious lives. “Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, along with senior officials, are visiting the site and monitoring the situation closely. The District Magistrate (DM) has been asked to submit a report on the incident. The rescue operation that is underway, is being carried out by the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, NDRF & Delhi Disaster Management Authority. Heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.”

Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra also visited the site and raised concerns about poor construction practices and unchecked urban corruption. In his post on X, he said: “Buildings are collapsing in certain types of localities. In the past 10 years, due to vote-bank politics, a dangerous cycle of corruption has taken place. First in Mustafabad, now in Seelampur. We will conduct an investigation into this.”

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of old and densely-packed residential areas in the city, especially during the monsoon season. Initial findings suggest that the structure may have been weakened by age and heavy rainfall in recent days.
