Islamabad, July 17: 63 people died and 290 were injured due to heavy rains and floods in several districts of Pakistani Punjab on Thursday. In view of the situation, emergency has been imposed in many areas.
Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that 15 people died in Lahore, 9 in Faisalabad, 5 in Sahiwal, 3 in Pakpattan and 9 in Okara. The government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday issued a warning of heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms across the country till July 17.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said on Thursday: “A state of emergency has been imposed in various areas of Punjab due to unusual rainfall and flooding.” She appealed to the people to cooperate with local authorities.
Rescue operation is underway to evacuate people trapped in flood in Jhelum. According to the local official, 57 people have been rescued so far, and more than 50 boats are engaged in this rescue operation. While more than 15,000 rescue workers and 800 boats are on high alert.
Heavy rain warning in Islamabad
The administration has been instructed to remain on high alert in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has ordered officials to provide all possible help to the people in emergency situations.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Randhawa said, “Field teams should provide all possible help to citizens in case of emergency.” He ordered strict monitoring of all highways, drains and waterways in Islamabad.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning of heavy rains in different parts of the country for the next 24 hours.
According to Radio Pakistan, heavy rains are expected in Punjab districts like Lahore, Chakwal, Attock, Jhelum, Khushab, Sargodha, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot.
Cloudburst causes flood in Chakwal
Punjab’s Chakwal district recorded 400 mm rainfall in 10 hours due to a cloudburst late Tuesday night, causing flash floods in the city.
At the same time, a child died and 11 people were injured due to heavy rains in Mandi Bahauddin. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Mandi Bahauddin recorded 167 mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 8 am on Wednesday.
Rescue officials said a 10-year-old boy died after drowning while bathing in rainwater. In another incident, two children aged 8 and 6 were injured after getting electrocuted during the rain.
