Patna [Bihar]: Lightning strikes during the monsoon storms in eastern India this week have resulted in at least 33 fatalities and dozens of injuries, according to officials.

In Bihar, most of the deaths occurred during intense storms between Wednesday and Thursday, primarily affecting farmers and laborers working outdoors.

Authorities have issued warnings for continued heavy rain and lightning in the region.

Bihar’s disaster management minister, Vijay Kumar Mandal, mentioned that officials in vulnerable districts have been instructed to raise awareness and implement precautionary measures based on lightning alerts. The state government has announced a compensation of ₹40 lakhs ($4,600) to the families of those who lost their lives.

Historically, lightning has caused significant loss of life in Bihar, with 243 deaths in 2024 and 275 in 2023. The eastern parts of India are particularly susceptible to annual floods during the monsoon, which often lead to fatalities and large-scale displacements.
