Releasing a statement regarding this matter, Ekta Kapoor wrote on Instagram,

“Balaji Telefilms Limited, a professionally run media company listed on BSE and NSE, is operating ALTT from June 20, 2025 after its recent merger with ALT Digital Media Entertainment Limited (which was previously a wholly owned subsidiary). There are reports in the media that ALTT has been shut down by the government, but contrary to these reports, Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor no longer have any association with ALTT. They have already parted ways with ALTT in June 2021. If anyone claims the contrary, then it is wrong. The media is requested to give only correct and accurate information. Balaji Telefilms Limited fully complies with all applicable laws and conducts its work with the highest corporate rules.”

AICWA supported the government’s decision

At the same time, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has welcomed this decision of the government. The association said that this step was necessary to stop the spread of obscenity on digital platforms.

AICWA also said that this is not just a government order but a historic victory. This is a victory for all Indians who believe in decency and responsible storytelling.

AICWA demanded that strict legal action should be taken against the owners of these platforms and the content creators.

The statement further said that this is a warning to the entire industry. This kind of content will not be tolerated anymore.

Thanking Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, AICWA appealed to the government to create a central regulatory body for OTT platforms.

Let us tell you that on Friday, the Central Government banned 25 OTT platforms that broadcast pornographic content. The government says that these apps were presenting obscene and objectionable videos in the name of entertainment.

The government has issued a notification asking Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block these OTT apps and websites. The banned apps also include famous platforms like ALTT, Ullu, Desi Flix.

Earlier in March 2024, the government had banned 18 OTT platforms for pornographic content. Along with this, 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media handles were also blocked.

OTT apps banned under four laws

  1. IT Act, 2000 (Section 67)- Publishing or disseminating obscene content on the Internet is a legal offence.
  2. IT Act, 2000 (Section 67A)- It is illegal to post videos or content related to sexual activity on the internet.
  3. BNS 2023 (Section 294)– Making obscene gestures or using obscene words in public places is a punishable offence.
  4. Pornography (Prohibition) Act 1986 (Section 4)- It is a legal offence to depict women in an indecent or derogatory manner through any medium.
