Initiative to Contain HIV and hepatitis, Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh flags off public awareness vans

The health minister said the five vans dispatched today will cover 750 villages for a month in the initial phase.

Mohali: Under the banner of ‘Tandrust and Rangla Punjab’, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government, after receiving encouraging results from the health examination of inmates of jails from de-addiction and rehabilitation centers, now the government has started screening to prevent the spread of HIV and hepatitis B and C in the state.

Giving this information, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh here on Tuesday launched a public awareness campaign against HIV, Hepatitis B and C in view of increasing cases of HIV AIDS across the state especially in Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Muktsar and Moga.

Public awareness vans for examination, treatment and counseling of victimized youth were flagged off from BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, Mohali. Health Minister said that screening is essential to prevent infection.

 He said that screening and awareness program has been started in the state under the leadership of Punjab State AIDS Control Society and with the support of National AIDS Control Organization.

The health minister said the five vans dispatched today will cover 750 villages for a month in the initial phase. Health Minister said that LED In addition to screening awareness films on prohibition of shared syringes/unsafe sex, street plays will be performed in equipped vans.

A lab technician and a counselor are also deployed in each van for free HIV/AIDS testing.

He appealed to the people to come forward voluntarily and get tested for HIV through these vans and keep their families safe from this infection. He further informed that there are 62044 HIV patients in Punjab.  

Stressing on HIV, Hepatitis B and C testing before marriage, he said that this would pave the way for a happy and healthy life after marriage. He said that hepatitis B and C can be treated while HIV can be controlled by keeping the viral load stable, so no one should hesitate to hide their disease and save society and their lives.
