Hungary buys Swedish fighter planes ahead of Sweden’s vote to join NATO

Hungary has signed a deal to buy four new Gripen fighter jets from Sweden ahead of a Feb. 26 vote in the Hungarian parliament on Sweden joining NATO.

BUDAPEST: Hungary has signed a deal to buy four new Gripen fighter jets from Sweden ahead of a Feb. 26 vote in the Hungarian parliament on Sweden joining NATO. According to the report of news agency Xinhua.

The agreement was announced on Friday during a bilateral meeting in Budapest between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson. The leaders unveiled amendments to the existing agreement regarding the rental of Gripen fighter aircraft and their support systems to Hungary. A new contract has also been signed for logistics services related to the Gripens, including training programmes. The agreement comes as Sweden seeks to abandon its long-standing policy of neutrality and join the NATO alliance in the wake of the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict that began two years ago. Hungary’s parliament has been called on Monday to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership.
