Kolkata: Senior Congress leader in West Bengal Kaustav Bagchi resigned from the party on Wednesday. Bagchi officially joined BJP on Thursday evening.

Kaustav Bagchi was welcomed into the BJP by Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Subhendu Adhikari in the presence of the party’s state unit chief Sukant Majumdar.

Kaustav Bagchi said that there is no point in making a political career unless you get a chance to work for the people. Congress has lost relevance in West Bengal. The party high command maintained complete silence on the incident that took place in Sandeshkhali.

After joining BJP, Kaustav Bagchi told reporters, ‘It seems that the Congress leadership is adopting a soft attitude towards the Trinamool Congress. In such a situation, there is no point in remaining in the party now.

Kaustav Bagchi claimed, “Grievances are increasing within the state Congress regarding the silence of the party high command on the Sandeshkhali issue. For me, staying in Congress was nothing but a compromise with self-respect.”

Differences between Kaustav Bagchi and the Congress high command came to the fore ever since the party leadership began alliance talks with CM Mamata Banerjee. Kailash Bagchi has many times been vocal against alliance talks with Trinamool.
