DC constitutes district level committee to settle matters related to seizures ahead of elections

DC Sarangal further explained that as per the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, this committee will take decisions regarding confiscation and release of cash and other items

Jalandhar: Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Vishesh Sarangal constituted a three-member committee to deal with cases related to seizure of cash and other material seized by flying squads, surveillance teams and excise teams to strictly enforce the model code of conduct.  

Giving details, the DC said that Additional Commissioner Municipal Corporation Jalandhar Amarjeet Bains will be the chairman of this committee, while Deputy Controller (Finance and Accounts) Aman Maini and District Treasury Officer Manjeet Kaur will be members in the committee.

DC Sarangal further explained that as per the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, this committee will take decisions regarding confiscation and release of cash and other items seized during checking so as to avoid any inconvenience to the general public. He said that the Committee will suo motu investigate each case of seizure made by the Police, SST or FST and on confirmation that the seized material is not linked to any political party or candidate, the Committee will consider releasing such material.

 He mentioned that if the person concerned has produced any evidence legitimizing the seized material, the committee will take a decision on handing over such cash or other seized material to him.

It is noteworthy that as per the guidelines of the Election Commission, the limit for carrying cash has been fixed at Rs 50,000. People carrying more than Rs 50,000 in cash in view of the Lok Sabha elections will have to carry bank receipts or proof of validity of the cash for carrying more cash than the prescribed limit.
