Spurious Liquor case: Death toll increases to 8 in Dirba, committee asked to submit report

Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal had said on Wednesday that the committee has been asked to submit a report on the matter within 72 hours.

Sangrur: The death toll has risen to eight as three more deaths have been reported in the case of spurious liquor.

Officials said that four people are currently admitted to Sangrur Civil Hospital and five others are admitted in Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. Sangrur Civil Surgeon Kripal Singh confirmed that a total of eight people have died so far in the incident.

On Wednesday, police had informed about the death of five people allegedly due to drinking spurious liquor in Gujran village of Dirba, Sangrur. He said that the police have already arrested three people in connection with the incident. A case has been registered under Indian Penal Code section 302 (murder) and Excise Duty Act and investigation is underway. The district administration has formed a five-member committee to investigate the matter.

The committee comprises the Dirba sub-divisional magistrate, two officers of the Dirba police (the deputy superintendent of police and an inspector in-charge), a senior medical officer and an excise and taxation officer. Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal had said on Wednesday that the committee has been asked to submit a report on the matter within 72 hours.

A survey was also conducted in Gujran village to find out if anyone else’s condition had also worsened. Meanwhile, former MLA Parminder Singh Dhindsa visited the Civil Hospital of Sangrur on Thursday and inquired about the health of the patients. They demanded the resignation of Dirba MLA and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and a judicial inquiry into the incident. Apart from this, he also demanded strict action against those selling poisonous liquor.
