All about your Constituency: Know about Sangrur Lok Sabha and contenders eager to rescue a constituency marred by challenges

The fight will be there between the incumbent SAD(A) who will try to maintain their hold on Sangrur and ruling state government AAP whose main effort will be to take back its seat where CM Bhagwant Mann remains MP for straight seven years.

Sangrur: Established in 1951, Sangrur lok Sabha seat has always been in the headlines. Comprising of five assembly constituencies, it has witnessed a diverse array of political leaders, including former chief ministers Surjit Singh Barnala and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, and the current Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. Despite such political prominence, the region continues to grapple with persistent issues that have plagued its development.

The constituency’s landscape is marred by systemic problems, ranging from skewed sex ratios to poor women’s literacy rates, and a worrying increase in cancer cases. Moreover, issues like inadequate drinking water, sanitation, escalating farmer suicides, and rampant poverty cast a shadow over the region’s progress. Despite being a key contributor to Punjab’s wheat production, the apathy towards farmers and agricultural laborers has turned Sangrur into a symbol of agrarian distress.

Traditionally, Sangrur has been a battleground for the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress, each securing the seat multiple times. However, the emergence of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with CM Bhagwant Mann’s consecutive wins, has reshaped the political landscape. Mann’s tenure has brought both hope and skepticism, with some lauding his efforts while others questioning the depth of change.
