New Delhi: Six former Congress rebels MLAs of Himachal Pradesh on Friday withdrew their petition filed in the Supreme Court against the Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker’s decision to disqualify them.
Senior advocate Abhinav Mukherjee, appearing for the former MLAs, told the bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Dutta that they wanted to withdraw the petition filed by them. While allowing them to withdraw the petition, the bench said, “We knew that this would happen because of the elections.”
Six former Congress rebels MLAs are now contesting the assembly by-elections. It should be noted that they have been fielded by BJP. The Supreme Court on March 18 refused to stay the Assembly Speaker’s order disqualifying six rebel Congress MLAs for ‘cross-voting’ in the recently held Rajya Sabha elections in Himachal Pradesh.
Six former MLAs – Sudhir Sharma, Ravi Thakur, Rajendra Rana, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Chaitanya Sharma and Devendra Kumar Bhutto – disobeyed the Congress whip by being present in the House and voting in favor of the Himachal Pradesh government during the cut motion and budget. By-elections for six assembly seats in the state and voting for four Lok Sabha seats are to be held on June 1.
What is the Matter?
Let us tell you that six Congress MLAs had cross-voted during the Rajya Sabha elections. This election was held on 27 February. Meanwhile, the budget session of Himachal Assembly was also going on. The budget of Himachal Assembly was to be passed after cross voting, but all these six MLAs were absent in this session. After this, due to violation of the assembly speaker whip, the assembly membership of all these six Congress MLAs was cancelled.
Later, these former MLAs, including Indradutt Pal Lakhan from Badsar, Chaitanya Sharma from Gagret, Sudhir Sharma from Dharamshala, Rajinder Rana from Sujanpur, Ravi Thakur from Lahaul Spiti and Devendra Bhutto from Kutlehar, filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the decision of the Speaker of Himachal Assembly which has now been withdrawn.
