Renowned Poet Surjit Patar passes away of cardiac arrest at 79

He took his last breath here in Ludhiana.

Ludhiana: In unfortunate news, Famous poet and writer Dr. Surjit Patar passed away today on Saturday. He bids adieu to the world at the age of 79. According to the information received, he died of cardiac arrest. He took his last breath here in Ludhiana.

Surjit Patar, who passed away at 79 is noted Punjabi Poet. He was born t in Pattar Kalan village of Punjab’s Jalandhar district in year 1945. His notable work includes ‘Hawa Vich Likhe Harf’, ‘Birakh Arz Kare’, and ‘Hanere Vich Sulagdi Varnmala’ and many other.

It is learnt that he left peacefully in his sleep. Today, morning when Bhupinder Kaur Patar found that that Dr Patar did not awaken and was unresponsive, he was rushed to DMC Hospital where he was declared dead.

The cremation ceremony is scheduled for Sunday

Born in Patar Kalan village of Jalandhar, Dr. Patar was president of Punjab Art Council. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2012 .

Earlier, he served as president of Punjabi Sahit Akademi and also served as a professor of Punjabi at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

Known as the “Baba Bohar” of Punjabi literature, the Sahitya Akademi, in tribute, wrote: “It is immensely sad and shocking to learn that Surjit Patar, a distinguished Punjabi poet, translator, and scholar, has passed away. His poems enriched Punjabi literature and influenced successive generations of poets. May he RIP.”
