Ludhiana: The funeral of eminent poet and writer Surjit Patar will be held today. The last rites will be held here in Ludhiana’s Model Town Extension Crematorium. The cremation will be done with state honors. Creating a void in the world of Punjabi literature, Surjit Patar passed away on Saturday. He died of cardiac arrest at the age of 79.
Several politicians including Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, SAD president Sukhbir Badal expressed grief over Patar’s demise. Padma Shri awardee Surjit Patar played a pivotal role in spreading Punjabi Language and literature across the world.
Bhagwant Mann to attend the funeral
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will attend the funeral here in Ludhiana. At this time, CM will also meet the bereaved family members.
Establishment of Patar Award
In remembrance of Surjit Patar, the Punjab government has decided to establish an award. The award will be accorded to the emerging poets. Though there is no official announcement but it is said that CM Mann will formally announce the award in the memory of Surjit Patar.
The winner of the Patar Award will be presented with Rs 1 lakh and a memento every year. This award will be led by the Language Department of the state to promote the Punjabi language and literature.
