CEO Punjab writes to EC of India on Channi’s Poonch terror remark; alleges violation of MCC

Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab, Sibin C, termed Congress candidate Charanjit Channi's comment on the Poonch terror attack as a violation of the electoral process.

Jalandhar : Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab, Sibin C, termed Congress candidate Charanjit Channi’s comment on the Poonch terror attack as a violation of the electoral process.

Punjab CEO Sibin C informed on Tuesday that, “According to the Jalandhar District Election Officer’s report, this (Channy’s comment) is a violation of the MCC (Model Code of Conduct).” After which the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has written a letter to the Election Commission of India for further action on this matter.

Let it be known that on May 4, terrorists attacked an Indian Air Force (IAF) convoy in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, in which one soldier was martyred and 4 were injured.

Responding to reporters’ questions on the attack on the Indian Air Force convoy, Channi had said, “These are all stunts, not attacks. Whenever elections are near, such stunts are done.” Let BJP win there is no truth in this. He alleged that BJP knows how to play with people’s lives and bodies. Questions were raised about this comment made by the former Chief Minister of Punjab and action was also demanded.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur had termed Channi’s remarks as ‘reprehensible’ and asked the Congress leadership to apologize to the people of the country for insulting the soldiers.

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa described Channi’s statement as disgusting and insulting to the soldiers.

Channi later said he was proud of the country’s soldiers but took aim at the Center over the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, saying the government could not find out till now that who carried out the attack.
