Chandigarh : During the Lok Sabha Elections, the Congress suffered a big blow in Chandigarh as former mayor and senior leader Subhash Chawla joins BJP.
Till yesterday, Subhash was campaigning for Congress candidate Manish Tiwari from Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat. It may be mentioned that Subhash Chawla has served twice as the Mayor of Chandigarh and has also been a member of AICC.
“He was feeling humiliated as despite being a hardcore Congress worker, he was not being given the respect he deserved,” a source said.
Political career of Subhash Chawla
Subhash Chawla has been the Mayor of Chandigarh twice. Chawla completed his tenure as mayor for the first time in 2003 and for the second time in 2023. Chawla is counted among the big leaders of Chandigarh.
Subhash Chawla has also been the President of Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee. In February 2021, Pradeep Chhabra was removed from the post of President and Subhash Chawla was given this post by the Congress high command. However, Subhash Chawla suddenly resigned from his post on 11 June 2022.
Many questions were raised regarding Chawla’s resignation from the post of president. After resigning from the post of President, Chawla was not seen as active for Congress. As active as he was before.
In such a situation, many speculations kept arising from time to time about his distancing from Congress and leaving Congress. Ultimately Chawla distanced himself from Congress. Subhash Chawla has also been the President of Chandigarh State Youth Congress.
