Giving shelter to criminals will lead to gang war in Canada: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that India's bilateral relations with Canada have deteriorated due to harboring pro-Khalistan separatist elements.

Nashik: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that India’s bilateral relations with Canada have deteriorated due to harboring pro-Khalistan separatist elements.

Answering questions at an event here, Jaishankar said, “Because of criminals, Canada will see gang wars in its territory. He said, ‘Everyone knows that our relations with Canada have deteriorated a bit these days and the reason for this is Canada’s domestic politics. “Freedom to support violence, separatism or terrorism in abroad cannot be freedom of expression. But there is a group of Khalistanis who have abused the freedom given to them in Canada, not now, they have been doing so for years,” he said.

The foreign minister said, ‘These elements are part of vote bank politics in Canadian politics. “Today I will tell you a fact why our bilateral relations have deteriorated due to the activities of these people,” he said.

He said that Indian diplomats are under threat from Khalistani elements and once a smoke bomb was thrown at the ambassador’s house. He said that those who support separatism against India are given shelter in that country.

Jaishankar said, “We feel that the Canadian government and politics should seriously consider this aspect. We have tried to explain to them several times that even if our relationship deteriorates, it is not in Canada’s interest.” That they are criminals – I can’t think of a better word to describe these elements because they will bring gangwar to Canada as well.

He said, “So they should consider our case, but because of their internal politics, they has refused to listen to us. There are people who are taking full advantage of this aspect.”

It is to be mentioned that this comment of the Foreign Minister has come at a time when four Indian citizens have been arrested by Canada in the case of the killing of separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last year and they have been charged with murder.

Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh, Karnpreet Singh and Amandeep Singh have been arrested in Nijjar murder case. Relations between the two countries have soured since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged the ‘possible’ involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s murder in September last year. India has rejected these allegations.
