What are the prices of potatoes and onions in the market?

If we talk about the prices of onion, onion has become expensive by 50 percent in a week. On June 2, 2024, the price of onion in the retail market was Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg. Which increased to 35 to 40 rupees per kg on June 9.

On June 11, the price of onion has increased to Rs 50 per kg. In such a situation, the vegetable seller says that when onions are expensive in the wholesale market, their price will definitely be higher in the retail market.

On May 25, the price of onion in Lasalgaon market of Nashik, the largest market of the country, was 17 rupees per kg, which has now become 25 rupees. Along with this, the price of good quality onion has crossed 30 rupees. In such a situation, it is normal to incur an additional cost of 5-7 rupees in the price of onions per kg when they come to Delhi from Nashik Mandi.

If we talk about the price of potato, in the beginning of June, the price of potato was 20-25 rupees per kg, which has now increased to 35 to 40 rupees per kg. Along with this, the price of Chipsona or Pahari potato has gone up to Rs 45 per kg.

Why is onion becoming expensive?

Eid al-Adha (Bakra Eid) is on 17 June 2024. In such a situation, the demand for onions increases during festivals. Traders already know that the demand increases during the festive season and they start stocking onions in advance.

Last year, the onion crop was damaged, due to which there was a decrease in the onion production. Onion prices had increased due to imbalance in production, demand and supply. You will be surprised to know that the onion that comes in June comes from the stock of farmers and traders. Currently, farmers are selling less stock as they expect onion prices to rise further.
