New Delhi: After completing Lok Sabha elections, in this summer season, the prices of vegetables are touching the sky. Along with onion and potato, tomato is also becoming expensive in many areas of the country. The price of tomato has doubled in the last two weeks.

Initially, the price of tomato was seen in Maharashtra and the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, but now its prices have increased across the country. It is being told that the prices of tomatoes may increase further.

What is the price of tomato?
According to Agricultural market net, a government portal, the average wholesale price of tomatoes in South India is Rs 35 to Rs 50 per kg. Along with this, the price of tomato has reached 60 rupees per kg in some markets of Karnataka.

According to the data, in the last two-three weeks, the prices of tomatoes have doubled compared to a year ago. However, tomato prices have not increased so much in North India so far. However, it is believed that the situation may get complicated in July. In fact, whenever there is a shortage in supply, prices rise.

Why are tomatoes becoming expensive?
According to experts, the production of tomato this year has not been high. Due to the extreme heat, the flowers and fruits were spoiled, due to which the production also decreased.

Apart from this, it is believed that there is not much supply of tomatoes in the market. Tomato prices have been skyrocketing between July and October for the past one year.

In many areas, tomato is cultivated during the rainy season, but sometimes the crop gets damaged due to heavy rains.

How expensive are potatoes and onions?
According to the official data, the price of potato has increased by 43.82 percent compared to the last one year. Along with this, the price of onion has also increased by 55.05 percent. Last year, the government banned the export of onion to control its prices, but the export of onion has resumed in the current financial year.

The prices of tomatoes have increased by about 37.29 percent. According to the Crisil (Crisil) report released a few days ago, the prices of onions have increased by 43 percent, the prices of tomatoes by 39 percent and the prices of potatoes by 41 percent.

The prices of vegetables are increasing due to severe heat and less rain. Experts on rising inflation say that the inflation rate will remain high due to heat. ICRA estimates that wholesale inflation may reach 3 percent in June 2024.
