Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy: Death toll climbs to 53, Madras HC reprimands state govt

Chennai: The death toll due to the consumption of spurious liquor in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu has risen further and reached to 53. The deceased also includes three women and a transgender. State Health Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Subramaniam Ma gave this information on Friday.

He said that so far 185 people were admitted to Kallakurichi Hospital, JIPMER Hospital in Puducherry, Salem Government Hospital and Viluppuram Government Hospital. So far 53 people have died in these. About 135 people are undergoing treatment. The condition of 30 people is critical, he added.

The series of deaths due to spurious liquor in Tamil Nadu started from the afternoon of 19 June. 34 people died on the first day. Of these, 24 were from the same village Karunapuram. On June 20, all the dead were cremated together. On June 21, the death toll reached 47.

Hooch tragedy reaches High Court

Meanwhile, while hearing a PIL filed regarding the poisonous liquor scandal, the Madras High Court reprimanded the Tamil Nadu government. Justice D Krishnakumar and Justice K Kumaresh Babu The division bench said that this is not the first time that the state government has failed to prevent deaths due to poisonous liquor.

The court said that it had read a news report regarding illegal liquor being sold in Kallakurichi even before this tragedy. Even some YouTubers had talked about it. The National Human Rights Commission had also issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government in May regarding this.

The court said that this matter is related to the lives of the people. Therefore, the court wants to know what action the police took to curb the sale of illegal liquor and how many cases were registered. The state government has been directed to file a report in this regard. The next hearing on this matter will be held on June 26.
