New Delhi: Tuesday (25 June) is the second day of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha. PM Modi will propose the candidate for the Lok Sabha Speaker today. For this, the name has to be given by 12 noon on Tuesday. BJP, which is far from majority on its own, is in discussions with NDA allies.
Encouraged by the increase in strength in the House, the opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A. can also create a situation of electoral contest to give a political message by considering all the options.
If this happens, then it will be the first time in the parliamentary history of the country, when the election for the post of Speaker is held. Since independence, the Lok Sabha Speaker has been selected unanimously.
In fact, the role of the Speaker is important in a coalition government. In such a situation, not only the opposition, but also the big allies of NDA like TDP and JDU are moving ahead cautiously. The suspense regarding this remained till late night on Monday (24 June).
Union Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu said, ‘The final decision will be taken by Andhra CM and TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu and the alliance leaders. It has been said that there will be discussions with another NDA ally BJP.’
According to sources, Om Birla is the front runner for this post. The names of former Union Minister and BJP MP Radha Mohan Singh, BJP MP from Andhra D. Purandeswari and Bhartruhari Mahtab, who became the Protem Speaker, are also in discussion.
Opposition said – it is the government’s job to build consensus
Opposition leaders said that our decision on the post of Speaker will depend on the NDA’s stand. RSP MP NK Premachandran, a constituent of I.N.D.I.A, said, ‘If the government does not try to build consensus, the opposition will contest the election. It is a tradition that the government should hold discussions to build consensus.’
In fact, the opposition wants the post of Deputy Speaker. Congress is brainstorming on making eight-time MP K. Suresh the Deputy Speaker. He comes from the Dalit community and was the biggest contender for the Protem Speaker. In such a situation, if consensus is not reached, elections may be needed. On the other hand, BJP wants its own speaker and for this, it is considering giving the post of deputy speaker to an ally.
281 MPs will take oath today
281 MPs will take oath on the second day of the Lok Sabha session. On the first day, Monday (24 June), 262 MPs took oath. Prime Minister Modi was the first to take oath and last was Dnyaneshwar Patil of Madhya Pradesh.
The first session of the Lok Sabha on Monday started with a lot of uproar. Before and after the session started, opposition MPs protested against the government outside the Parliament with a copy of the Constitution in their hands. The opposition alleges that the government ignored the rules in the appointment of the protem speaker.
This protest was also seen inside the Parliament. When the oath taking of MPs started, Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to the podium first. Many opposition MPs including Rahul Gandhi showed the copy of the Constitution towards the PM. When the Prime Minister returned after taking oath, he was greeted with folded hands from both sides.
