Group of progressive farmers led by Cabinet Minister Chetan Singh Joramajra visit Jammu and Kashmir

He hoped that help can be taken from Jammu & Kashmir for introducing mulberry varieties and new technologies for silk production.

With the objective of implementing potential fruits and flowers, mulberry varieties for silk production and new technologies for the Shivalik foothills and Kandi belt of Punjab, progressive farmers of the state under the leadership of Horticulture Minister S. Chetan Singh Joda Majra made a five-day exposure tour of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Cabinet Minister and farmers visited the horticulture related Centre of Excellence for Fruits (Zawoora, Srinagar), Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology (Kashmir), Saffron Park (Dussu, Pulwama), Central Institute for Temperate Horticulture, Model High Density Apple Orchard (Srinagar), Potato Farm (Gulmarg), Industrial Growth Centre (Lassipora) and Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute Central Silk Board (Pampore) and collected various information.

Horticulture Department Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) shared important information about the cultivation of horticultural crops related to Punjab, use of new technologies and the establishment of low-chilling varieties of pear, peach, plum apple and silk reeling units to improve the standard of horticulture in Punjab in future.

Addressing during these events, Horticulture Minister S. Chetan Singh Jora Majra said that the government led by Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann is encouraging the farmers of the state to move away from traditional crop cycle and produce more profitable fruits and flowers according to the current times.

He said that the weather in Shivalik foothills and Kandi region of Punjab is colder than the rest of the state, hence plans are being made to produce new potential fruits and flowers in these areas. He hoped that help can be taken from Jammu & Kashmir for introducing mulberry varieties and new technologies for silk production.
