Jalandhar: Amid the ongoing feud in Shiromani Akali Dal during the by-election in Jalandhar, Punjab, senior Akali leader Gurcharan Singh Parmar has joined Aam Aadmi Party along with his family.

Dr. Gurpreet Kaur said – The party has got strength due to the entire family joining AAP during the by-election in the West constituency. In such a situation, the vote bank of Aam Aadmi Party will increase.

Gurcharan Singh Parmar contested the 2002 election from Adampur on an Akali Dal ticket. According to the information received, Parmar’s entire family was with the Akali Dal for the last 35 years. Parmar was jailed during the 1984 Dharam Yudh Morcha while he was in the Akali.

Why is a by-election being held on the Jalandhar West seat?

In the 2022 assembly elections, the Jalandhar West seat was won by AAP candidate Sheetal Angural, but before the Lok Sabha elections, Angural joined the BJP. He had resigned from the post of MLA. However, before the voting of the Lok Sabha elections on June 1, Angural asked the Speaker to withdraw his resignation on May 29, but by then the resignation was accepted.

In this election, Angural has been given a ticket by the BJP. AAP has fielded Mohinder Bhagat, son of Bhagat Chunnilal, who was a minister in the Akali-BJP government. Congress has given a ticket to former Deputy Mayor Surinder Kaur.
