Early warning system installation at Pandoh Dam in Himachal

As the gates of Pandoh Dam are opened, the hooter will sound till Mandi city.

Mandi: As soon as the gates of Pandoh Dam open to release water in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, loud hooters will sound from the dam to Mandi city, due to which people will be alerted at the same time. For this, BBMB management is going to install an early warning system at Pandoh Dam. This information was given by BBMB Superintending Engineer E. Ajaypal Singh while talking to media persons after the function organized on the 48th foundation day of the BSL project at Pandoh Dam.

He said that the tender for this sensor-based early warning system has been placed and will be installed in the next two months. Six hooters will be installed on the banks of the Beas River from Pandoh Dam to Mandi City. This hooter will not only sound but there will also be a provision to broadcast the message through voice. The hooter will be omnidirectional, meaning it will be heard in all four directions. Earlier, this hooter used to sound only around Pandoh Dam and the market, but it had to be sounded manually. Now it is being installed with an automatic system.

Ajaypal Singh clarified that the Pandoh Dam is not a storage dam but a diversion dam. 8500 cusecs of water are sent from the tunnel built to send water for the buggy from here, while the rest of the water has to be released into the Beas River. Therefore, people should stay away from the Beas River or all other types of rivers and streams during the rainy season because, during this time, there is no way to know when the water level will rise.

He said that work is going on on the proposal to install a security wall in all the residential areas near Pandoh. Its drawing has been made, and soon it will be sent for final approval. After the final approval, this work will be started as soon as the money is approved. It is estimated that this project is going to cost 8 to 10 crores. He said that the management is also thinking about the part-time workers at BBMB, and a decision will be taken on this soon.
