Supreme Court admits NEET-UG paper leak: Demands NTA report on exam leak centers and benefiting students by July 10, next hearing on July 11

New Delhi: The Supreme Court heard the medical entrance exam NEET-2024 controversy for 2 hours and 20 minutes on Monday, July 8. The court has asked the NTA to provide information about the candidates who benefited from the irregularities and the CBI to give an update on the investigation so far.

At the same time, information has been sought from the central government about the expert committee formed to improve the NTA.

Apart from this, a consolidated report of a maximum of 10 pages has been sought from the petitioners seeking re-examination. The court said that all should submit their answers by 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The next hearing in the case will now be held on July 11.

A bench comprising Chief Justics D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B Pardiwala and Manoj Misha is also hearing separate plea over 50 successful Gujarat based NEET UG candidate.

CJI said, ‘It is clear that the paper has been leaked. The question is: how big is its scope? It is important to understand how widespread the paper leak is. The entire exam cannot be cancelled just because of the mistake of two people. We want to know what steps NTA and the government have taken so far to identify the accused of the paper leak.’

The court is hearing 38 petitions simultaneously. Of these, 34 petitions have been filed by students, teachers, and coaching institutes, while 4 petitions have been filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA). More than 50 petitions have been filed against re-exams.

The NEET exam was held on May 5, this year. About 24 lakh candidates appeared at 4,750 examination centers in 571 cities. But this exam came into controversy even before the exam.

After the paper leak and giving grace marks to 1563 students, many students alleged rigging and irregularities. Protests took place in many cities regarding this. Opposition parties raised this issue in Parliament.

The government clarified. Meanwhile, students knocked on the doors of the high courts in the states to the Supreme Court.
