Mumbai: at Mumbai Airport: Air India recruitment drive turns into stampede amidst massive applicant turnout

An Air India recruitment drive for airport loaders turned chaotic at Mumbai airport yesterday as over 25,000 applicants surged forward for just 600 vacancies, overwhelming Air India staff and prompting a stampede-like situation.

Visuals from the scene depicted applicants jostling to reach the form counters, with reports indicating that many endured hours-long waits without access to food or water, resulting in several individuals feeling unwell.

Who are Airport Loaders?

Airport loaders play a crucial role in aircraft operations, responsible for loading and unloading luggage, operating baggage belts, and ramp tractors. Each aircraft typically requires a minimum of five loaders to handle luggage, cargo, and food supplies efficiently.

While the salary for airport loaders ranges from ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 per month, additional overtime allowances often push earnings above ₹30,000. The job requires basic educational qualifications but demands physical strength from candidates.

This incident in Mumbai follows closely after a viral video captured scenes of chaos at a walk-in interview in Ankleshwar, Gujarat, where 1,800 applicants competed for just 10 positions at a private firm.

The rush was so intense that a railing leading to the office’s entry collapsed under the weight of the crowd, though thankfully, no serious injuries were reported among those affected.

Reacting to the video, the Congress criticized what it termed as the “BJP’s Gujarat model,” accusing the ruling party of exacerbating unemployment issues nationwide.

Air India is yet to respond to the viral video depicting the Mumbai recruitment drive.
