Dhaka: Thousands of students in Bangladesh are protesting on the streets and demanding the abolition of reservation. This protest has now taken a violent turn. 6 people have died in clashes with the police. At the same time, more than 400 protesters are reported to be injured.
According to the Bangladeshi newspaper Dhaka Tribune, six people, including a child, were shot in a violent clash between protesting students and police during the agitation in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday evening. The situation has worsened so much that educational institutions in different cities of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, have been closed indefinitely.
Nationwide shutdown on Thursday, emergency services will continue
The protesting students have announced a nationwide shutdown on Thursday. The leaders of the student movement have said that everything will be closed on Thursday except hospitals and emergency services. During this time, only ambulance service will be allowed to go out on the streets.
Why protest by students in Bangladesh?
These students are protesting against reservation or job quota in government jobs for the children of soldiers who fought in the 1971 Liberation War. A week before this, the Supreme Court had banned reservation in government jobs, but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not allow this decision to be implemented. Hasina government says that this decision is in her hands.
In Bangladesh, people who fought the 1971 war against Pakistan are called war heroes. 30% of the jobs in Bangladesh are reserved for the children of these war heroes. Students are angry about this reservation.
Agitating Students demand that jobs should be given on the basis of merit. Just because someone’s ancestors were war heroes does not mean that their children should also get the benefit.
