Chandigarh: The political situation has intensified following the return of the Punjab University Law Amendment Bill 2023 by President Draupadi Murmu after it was passed by the Punjab government. CM Bhagwant Mann insists that the elected Chief Minister should serve as the Chancellor of the University. We believe that the Chancellor should be elected rather than appointed.
He finally said that when the Governor does not want to pass the bill, he does it in this way. He sends the bill to the President, after which the President keeps it with him for some time and sends it back.
The Punjab CM said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kerala had also passed such a bill. He argued that the Chancellor of the University should be the elected Chief Minister. He said that if we have to make the VC of Punjabi University, then three names will be given to Governor. He will choose one name from them. In such a situation, who made the choice, the selected or the elected?
We had also passed the SGPC bill and sent it, but nothing happened to it. This means that the governor sends the bill which he does not want to pass to the President. He sends it back after four to five months. We will do a meeting regarding this matter.
