Union Budget 2024 was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Soon after the completion of the budget,  MPs from Punjab launched protest against the Centre government. MPs from the Congress party expressed their disappointment as no special mention or announcement has been made for Punjab.  Slogans opposing the Centre government and budget by Finance Minister were raised by the congress MPs outside the parliament.

At the same time, SAD MP Harsimrat Badal has called it a ‘government saviour budget’. She also brought a private bill to legalise MSP for crops and urged all others to support it.

Congress MPs called out the NDA government as a government that betrayed Punjab. Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring posted on social media and called the BJP a government that treats Punjab step-motherly. In a post on X, Raja Warring said, “Disheartened to hear FM budget proposals. Punjabis had high hopes from the @narendramodi-led union government. The FM chose not to mention Punjab even once throughout her speech. The Country’s food bowl deserves special grants for our infrastructural needs but @BJP4India continues to ignore Punjab.

AAP leader and Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema also expressed disappointment with the budget. He said that Punjab has been treated like a stepmother. He said that nothing has been given for small-scale industries of the state. The 36% subsidy that was available on fertilizers has been reduced. Input cost has increased. He added that the BJP government is forcing farmers to commit suicide.

He said that input is taken from every state before the budget. Narrating his experience he said when he met Finance Minister Sitharaman, he expressed the need for an economic package for diversification of two crops in Punjab but the central government ignored it.  No package has been given to the youth of Punjab to bring industry like other states.
